Violin by Antonio Gragnani, Italy 1771
Antonio Gragnani probably studied in Florence, though his style differs considerably from that of the late-18th century Florentine makers. He worked in Livorno, whose seaside location may have afforded him different materials from his contemporaries some 50 miles inland. He used whalebone in his purfling and his scrolls are characteristically elongated. Gragnani used the models of Stradivari in his building with regularity but also utilized more petite models, hearkening back to the influence of Stainer and Amati.
This violin exhibits all of the tonal characteristics one would expect from an Italian antique and with relatively flat arching it has plenty of projection. The sound produced is exquisite and we are eagerly looking forward to pairing this violin with it's next caretaker. It would be a fine instrument for a discerning professional, mature concert-artist, or collector.
