Cello by Anton Somers, Melsele 2022
Bright Versatility for Professionals
This cello has a bright, focused personality that never tips into harshness, with a resonant tone that opens up easily right from the first touch. Its registers are well matched to one another, giving the instrument a sense of consistency and balance across the full range. Projection-wise, it's equally at home in chamber music and orchestra — able to create a strong foundation without disturbing the delicate balance around it. It's an instrument that can meet the expectations of a demanding player in professional settings, and has been recognized as such, having been featured in our exhibition La Forma del Suono.
Anton Somers, born in 1986 in Borgerhout, Belgium, built his first instrument at 15 and trained at the Violin Making School of Antwerp. After gaining professional experience in Brussels, he opened his own workshop in Melsele, where he began establishing his reputation for meticulous craftsmanship. Awarded the Coup du Cœur at VioloncellenSeine in Paris (2016). He later taught at the Antwerp Violin Making School until 2021. In 2022, he relocated his workshop to central Antwerp. His instruments are highly sought for their tonal excellence, aesthetic refinement, and attention to detail.
