Violin by Aegidius Kloz, Labeled as Sebastian Kloz, Mittenwald 1770-80
This violin has an excellent ringing tone with a bright, lively character and a clean, focused sound across all registers. Built in the characteristic Mittenwald tradition, it features a narrow-grain spruce top and a two-piece back with fine, narrow flames. The varnish is a warm amber-gold that gives the instrument a classic and attractive appearance.
In very good state of preservation, it plays and presents itself as a solid and reliable instrument well-suited for a range of players and settings.
The Klotz family is a distinguished lineage of the violin makers in Mittenwald, Germany. Their name is synonymous with “the Mittenwald School” as their enormous output and excellence in craftsmanship made a lasting impact on violin trade and tradition. Aegidius Sebastian Klotz (1733 – 1805) worked out of Mittenwald and produced fantastic copies of his elder's, Aegidius I, works. Klotz's style was reminiscent of the Amati family style, with Kloz's scroll being slightly elongated and with Stainer-esque f-holes.
