Violin by Jordan Hess, Salt Lake City, 2019

This Guadagnini patterned violin was made in Salt Lake City in 2019. It is one of the most beautiful violins of this emergent master that we have seen and has a fully mature tone having been owned by a local professional for several years. A dramatically figured single piece back and eccentric and passionate yet balanced woodworking combined with a robust tone and plenty of color in all registers. This is an instrument for a discerning professional for any and all musical settings.

Jordan Hess is a young violin maker from rural east-central Indiana who began making instruments at age nine. By 15, he was apprenticing at Indianapolis Violins and later attended the Violin Making School of America. He has worked with Salt Lake City luthier John Young and now builds his own instruments using traditional Cremonese methods. Focusing primarily on new making, he develops personal models alongside occasional bench copies inspired by historic makers. His designs are based on a proportional system he developed, drawing from Stradivari, Amati, and Guarneri “del Gesù” molds, as well as original forms. His instruments range from grand-pattern Strads to smaller del Gesù models, offering a tonal palette from warm and colorful to rich and powerful.
