Cello by Michael Fischer, Los Angeles 2006
Velvety, Broad Tone for Recording Studios.
This cello has a warm, sophisticated tone with a broad, rounded quality that naturally lends itself to chamber playing and blending within an ensemble. Its softer, velvety texture gives the sound an inviting depth, and while the upper register avoids harshness, it carries a lovely airiness at its highest reach. The registers are well balanced throughout, and this is an instrument that rewards a practiced hand — its full character emerges for the player with a clear artistic identity. That same richness makes it particularly well-suited to the recording studio, where its nuances can truly shine.
Michael Fischer, born in southern Germany, trained at the Mittenwald Violin Making School and worked in London with Dietrich Kessler and Charles Beare before relocating to Los Angeles in the early 1980s. After opening his own restoration-focused workshop in 1984, he became known for making highly successful copies of historic instruments, producing nearly 320 examples. His instruments are played internationally and have been praised by leading musicians such as Gil Shaham and Gidon Kremer.
