Viola by Michael Fischer, Los Angeles 1999 - 15 1/4"
Compact Design with Strong Voice
With a strong, distinctive personality and a rich voice, this viola plays well beyond its compact dimensions. Its broad, velvety lower registers provide a firm expressive foundation, while the upper registers offer greater focus and directness. It's different registers are united in overall timber, allowing them all to blend easliy across the strings so that melodies flow without interruption or loss of colour. Exceptionally articulate, individual voices within the texture emerge with striking clarity, making it a rewarding instrument in both ensemble and solo repertoire. Powerful and highly responsive, it is a natural choice for the emerging soloist seeking an instrument with genuine character and presence.
Michael Fischer, born in southern Germany, trained at the Mittenwald Violin Making School and worked in London with Dietrich Kessler and Charles Beare before relocating to Los Angeles in the early 1980s. After opening his own restoration-focused workshop in 1984, he became known for making highly successful copies of historic instruments, producing nearly 320 examples. His instruments are played internationally and have been praised by leading musicians such as Gil Shaham and Gidon Kremer.
